Biography
Born: San Francisco, 1954 – I began photographing seriously at the age of twenty and received my B.A. (1978) and M.A.(1980) in Art from San Francisco State University. I am a recipient of both a Fulbright Scholar Award (Britain) and aRockefeller Foundation residency, Bellagio, Italy.
In 2005, the University of Virginia Press published my long-‐term project,
Imagining Eden: Connecting Landscapes. The book includes sixty photographs made over a sixteen-‐year period fromlocations in America and Europe and includes an introduction by British cultural geographer Denis Cosgrove. These imaginative places, whether a city park, garden, cemetery, golf course, or military reservation, were created as an attempt at recovering a connection with nature lost with Eden.
In 2013, I began a ten-year project titled: Living with the Horizon, photographing within coastal homes with an uninterrupted view of the horizon. What they place near a window becomes part of the landscape. Sometimes the objects seem to be randomly placed and other times positioned with great care—almost a shrine. Whether random or deliberate, the objects always possess an added gravitas when in the presence of the horizon. Living with the Horizon will be exhibited at the Monterey Museum of Art in 2025.
My work can be found in numerous permanent collections, including: San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art; George Eastman House; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris;Cantor Center, Stanford University; Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; and Museum of Photographic Arts, SanDiego.
I served as head of the photography program at College of San Mateo for over thirty years and retired from teaching in 2015.
